Healthy Menu Planning for Your Next Flight

If you've ever been on a plane than you probably already know the food service on flights is less than stellar. It is often over priced and over cooked. If you're dreading that part of a long flight or long day of traveling than you're certainly not alone. However, you don't have to settle for the food that is typically served on a plane - you can bring your own. This will save you money and keep your health on the right path, even if you're flying around the world.

The TSA allows passengers to pack their own food within reason. Keep in mind that everything you bring will go through the x-ray machine, so if you are going to pack it yourself, put it in plastic bags that are sealable. There are also pre-packaged items at your local grocery store that fit into the TSA's parameters for bringing food on an airplane. They do have certain size limits, so it is a good idea to look up those parameters and follow them closely so that your food doesn't get confiscated at the last minute.

Some good healthy examples of what to bring on a flight includes almonds and chia seeds. Both are good for keeping you full for a longer period of time. Fruits and veggies are also great options. Bananas, cherries, and watermelon are also a good idea. You can bring the bananas on without pre-slicing, but of course you'll need to pre-slice the watermelon and put it in a plastic bag. Crunch cucumber slices are also a good snack. Bags of popcorn, kale chips, and dried fruits are also allowed. If you don't want to pay for the drink service on board, no problem. Bring your own coconut water or chamomile tea bags. Have a craving for avocado? Bring it with you. You can ask for a butter knife or utensils while on the flight to slice it after you peel it. As for dips and sauces such as hummus, you can bring those too, just pay attention to portion sizes. Basically with a little bit of planning, the sky is the limit when it comes to eating healthy on your next flight. So don't think you have to overpay for food that isn't good for you - you do have options.
