Soft Drink Alternatives

Soft Drink Alternatives

Soft drinks may just be America’s favorite type of beverage. According to a recent article from the Associated Press, the average American drinks 44 gallons of soft drinks every year. Unfortunately, soft drinks are high in sugar, which can spike insulin levels and increase hunger. Ultimately, these blood sugar fluctuations can increase your risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Contrary to popular belief, diet soda is not a healthier alternative. Diet soda contains chemicals that researchers believe can also increase feelings of hunger. Both regular soft drinks and diet soda contain high levels of acid that can damage your teeth. Soft drink alternatives can prevent dehydration and promote healthy cellular functions.

Water

Water is one of the healthiest beverage options available today. If you are not a fan of plain water, add a few slices of citrus fruit, cucumber or watermelon or garnish with a sprig of mint to add a dash of flavor without extra calories or artificial ingredients. You can also add berries and bits of other fruits to an ice cube tray for a colorful twist of flavor to a glass or pitcher of water.

Juice

Real fruit juice can be a great change of pace from energy drinks. Add sparkling water to cut calories and sugar content and to add a light, fizzy burst of fun. Vegetable juice can be another choice for those who prefer something with a little less sweet and a little more kick.

Tea

Tea is a natural source of antioxidants, and studies show it may even help reduce the risk of early passing by combating heart disease, high blood pressure and other health problems. Green tea is the best option and is available in a variety of flavors. Although tea is light and refreshing as-is, if you prefer to drink yours sweet, add a touch of honey for flavor and sweetness. Stevia, a naturally sweet, calorie-free herb, can also be a good choice.

As healthy as these drinks can be, they are not necessarily good sources of electrolytes. Electrolytes can be lost due to physical exertion, exercise or regular daily activities. Water and other beverages can prevent you from becoming dehydrated, but they may not be effective at replacing electrolytes. Milk can be a good source of electrolytes and protein. If you do not like milk, try eating a banana with your drink, or drop some sliced bananas and fresh berries into juice and whirl into a smoothie.
