Grilling for Better Health

Summer is here and along with the warmest time of the year comes the irresistible craving for delicious seasonal food. It's time to invite some friends over and get ready to grill because we've just made it easier than ever to enjoy classic summer dining with less stress, less worrying and much more fun.

This part of the year inevitably brings more free time for everyone. The kids are out of school and vacations are planned. Even if the majority of your vacation time is spent hanging out in your own backyard, you want it to count. Make sure it does with at least one spectacular picnic. While the thought of a traditional picnic may put some committed dieters off, there is a way to make sure everyone is happy. Grill lean meats like chicken, turkey and fish for a great junk food alternative without sacrificing any of the things you love about summertime get-togethers.

Another benefit of summer backyard grilling is the social aspect. Nothing brings a neighborhood together faster than the enticing aromas of warm wood smoke and tangy-sweet barbecue sauce. The unmistakable smell of the season brings families from around the block to peek in over the fence, led by their noses to a party just waiting to happen. Stock up on extra vegetables like corn on the cob and asparagus, both of which are easy to throw on the grill and cover while you mingle with guests. Pair with deliciously seasoned chicken breasts marinated with cilantro and lime or barbecued shrimp tossed with whole wheat pasta and a balsamic vinaigrette glaze. Quick, delectable recipes like these aren't only better for your health. The intense flavor achieved through such a simple process makes putting on the back porch picnic of the summer easier than you ever thought possible.

Kabobs are another easy party idea when you have an unexpected number of people coming over. Simply skewer some quartered red onions, pineapple slices, red and green bell peppers, baby portobello mushrooms and sliced zucchini before brushing them lightly with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkling with sea salt and cracked black pepper. They grill at the same temperature you would use to cook chicken and come out perfectly with a nice charred crisp to the outside. Your guests will love them and you'll love knowing that you've served up something healthier than anything deep fried ever could be.
