Healthy Retirement Hobbies

Retirement is a fantastic time in any person's life. No longer do you have to deal with the stresses of work, and you finally have the time to pursue those activities which pique your interest.

In fact, it is crucial that you find a hobby with which to occupy your time. Retired persons who fail to partake in activities that promote overall health are prone to heart disease, weakened joint and muscle composition, insufficient hormones, mental disease, and more. Thankfully, there are innumerable different hobbies from which you can choose, and by selecting activities that speak to your interests, you can ensure that you stay in prime physical and mental health for many years to come.

Challenging the Body

Retired persons should take special care to stay physically active, as this can help to prevent both common conditions such as arthritis and more serious diseases such as diabetes. This does not necessarily mean that you must dedicate hours upon hours of your retired life to the gym; rather, activities that promote regular, moderate-level physical activity are ideal as you age. Hiking is an excellent activity for lovers of the outdoors.

Hiking is beneficial to the body because it raises the heart rate and develops strong leg muscles. It also provides a spectacular opportunity to travel, learn about your natural surroundings, and gain a new appreciation for nature.

If you prefer to stay within the comforts of your backyard, then you might consider gardening as a hobby. Bodily exertion involved with weeding, planting, tilling, and more provides you with excellent exercise while simultaneously beautifying your yard and/or providing you with healthy, scrumptious produce. Even if your home does not have adequate outdoor space, many community organizations offer gardening plots for rent to seniors.

Challenging the Mind

Studies have shown that those who regularly challenge the mind are less likely to suffer from common mental illnesses as they age. Intellectual pursuits will help to keep your mind sharp for many years to come.

Learning to play a musical instrument, for example, has been shown to actively exercise the brain. Other retired persons take up writing, chess, or card games. You might also consider investigating your family history. Recording a family memoir is both a fascinating and valuable pursuit; your loved ones will cherish the opportunity to learn about their ancestors, and the finished work will provide a gathering point that will encourage closeness and togetherness.
