Improving The Immune System of The Elderly

As we age, our bodies change in ways that aren't always visible from the outside. The immune system that constantly protects you from harmful bacteria and viruses begins to offer slightly less protection as your body ages. A healthy daily regimen that includes sufficient rest, no smoking, plenty of sleep, regular exercise and a diet of low fat foods, fresh fruits and vegetables has been shown to be highly conducive to developing a more effective immune system, particularly in later age. These measures also contribute to more stable blood pressure, decreased levels of stress and the maintenance of a healthy, normal weight.

Though highly trained medical professionals and psychiatrists agree that holding to these standards of health is the best way to ensure a fulfilling, happy life and a stronger immune system in aging individuals, sticking to this type of regimen may not come easily at first. This is true particularly during the holiday season and when celebration is the heart of a gathering or family event. Elderly men and women can still take part in the joys and experiences that come with the festivities at these times, including indulging in a rich dessert or delighting in a few cocktails with friends. Barring any specific instructions from your doctor or nutritionist, a few sweets and alcohol in moderation are considered to be fine and can add an extra level of enjoyment to any special occasion.

The thymus gland is an integral organ in the human body and is located behind the sternum toward the upper part of the chest. As the body ages and the thymus gland atrophies, a noticeable decrease in T cells is considered normal. While T cells are produced throughout the course of a lifetime, their numbers dramatically decrease in old age, thereby diminishing the immune system's ability to fight foreign bacteria in the event of an illness. This is why it is so important that elderly patients ensure that they visit doctors regularly, take appropriate sanitary actions throughout the year and receive annual flu vaccines before the flu season takes hold in late autumn and early winter.
