Memorial Day Weekend 2013 Fun

Memorial Day Weekend 2013 Fun

Memorial Day weekend, which tends to come right after most graduations, has long represented the unofficial start of summer. Originally called Declaration Day, Memorial Day gives us an opportunity to remember and reflect on those who served and died in the service of our country. Although it is unclear where this tradition began, Southern women’s groups who decorated the graves of our soldiers every May were largely instrumental in the holiday’s official beginnings. New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day, but it is now celebrated throughout the country on the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women who died in our nation’s conflicts, but it can also be a time to celebrate their lives. Many people use the long holiday weekend to kick off the summer season. Barbecues, picnics and time with family and friends can provide the perfect environment for a “staycation.”

Here’s what you need to know before you fire up the grill.

1. Head outdoors.
The warm weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Barbecue, icy drinks, music and pool-side lounging can make your get-together more enjoyable.

2. Decorate.
Be creative with your space, and use unexpected elements. Vases of red and white carnations topped with small flags can lend a festive air to your tables while patriotic bunting can liven up even the darkest corners. Small red, white and blue candles are perfect for use in the kitchen or bathroom, or they can be used outdoors for evening get-togethers. Tiki torches and paper lanterns can be fun and festive both day and night.

3. Be creative.
Themed side dishes or desserts at your picnic can be fun. Red and blue berries and slices of juicy watermelon can be used to garnish cakes and trifles, or they can add a boost of flavor and color to spritzers, iced water or lemonade.

4. Take necessary safety precautions.
The sun can be intense this time of year, so carefully situated umbrellas can heighten your guests’ experience. Keep sunblock on hand to protect sensitive skin, and ensure you have plenty of drinks to help your guests stay cool. Limit foods that may spoil, or place their serving dishes over an ice-filled tray or bowl. Keep hot foods hot using chafing dishes.

Check local events for Memorial Day services or other activities. These can round out your vacation weekend and give you more opportunities to socialize and meet plenty of interesting new people.
